The town's name changed to Jonesboro in 1877, and by the mid-1880s it had grown to 350 residents, with two steam gristmills, cotton gins, a sawmill, and three churches. The population later grew to 700 before settling into the smaller, close-knit community it is today.
Jonesboro has always valued education, too. The town has long been served by the Jonesboro Independent School District, which includes the Jonesboro School. Notably, Cloyce Box, a standout football player, got his start playing at Jonesboro School.
