Recognizing the opportunity of being served by two railroads, Walling worked to bring both lines together in one town, which is actually how Malone got its current name—named for William Malone, president of one of the railroads.
The town thrived in its early decades, reaching a population of 550 with thirty-five businesses by the mid-1920s, and a combined high school and elementary school serving 400 students. Like many small Texas towns, Malone saw ups and downs through the decades that followed, but it held on better than many similarly sized communities. Interestingly, the town actually began growing again after the 1960s, likely due to its proximity to the Navarro Mills Reservoir.
